Tying the Diawl Bach with Marabou Tail Step 1

Step 1

Catch the thread onto the hookshank.

Step 2

Prepare some ginger marabou and catch in, secure along the hookshank with thread. I usually make the marabou tail slightly longer than the hook shank length.

TIP: When preparing the marabou, place the marabou tips in your left hand between index finger and thumb and with the right hand move your thumb and index finger nails down the marabou stripping the webby marabou bulk off the stems. This will result in a slimmer body when tied in. (See the Techniques section for more detailed information)

Step 5

Wind the herls up the hookshank towards the eye in a reverse direction to that of the rib (ie Under hookshank, rear, over top of hookshank, front), making sure not to cross the herls.

Step 8

Invert the fly in the vice. Take some hackle fibres and introduce them to where they will be tied in, the length should be roughly the length from eye to barb.

Step 9

Perform two wraps of thread around the hackle fibre stems and let the bobbin hang loose. Now adjust the hackle fibres until you are happy with their position, then take the bobbin again keeping the thread taught and secure the hackle fibres in with thread. Trim any waste ends that are protruding.

Step 11

Catch in a Sunburst Goose biot to each side of the head. The length is up to you, the one pictured is around 3/4 the length of the body. Make sure each goose biot lays horizontally down the centre of the body.
