The Hawthorn flies tend to be in their element in the first few weeks of May at our local lakes, cast out on a floating line and either fish it static or use a slow twitch type of retrieve. It's best taking a variety of Hawthorn patterns with you as fish tend to take different types of patterns each day. On some days they will only take patterns that match the Hawthorn's exactly in size and appearance.
