Take hold of the cock hackle with your left hand using finger and thumb or hackle pliers and hold the gold wire with your right hand. Keep the hackle taught horizontally and wind the wire back up the hookshank trapping the palmered hackle in as you go, making sure not to trap any of the hackle fibres. (An easy way to prevent this is to move the wire from side to side as you wind). Secure the wire and trim both the wire and the hackle tip that is left at the lower end of the hook. Now catch in a Red Game Hackle with barbs slighly longer than the hackle used for the palmered body hackle, this will create the head hackle.
Wind the head hackle a few times, each turn in front of the previous, secure the hackle stem, trim the waste, whip finish and varnish the thread just behind the bead. The head hackle fibre density depends on preference, I prefer a fairly bulky head hackle but some prefer them sparse.
